Final Piece - My Lost Environment

Description

I've been working on this piece for a couple of weeks now, and it's finally done! This project focuses on the theme environment, so I decided to cover my environment - my house. As a lot of you will know, a few years go my house burnt down. It was a pretty traumatic experience and I'm still not over it, so I decided to do what any artists would do and make art out of it!

Everything in this piece uses items from house, many of them are burnt and ruined or rusted. I hung items in the window frame (burnt from the fire) with fishing wire and eyelet hooks. I then used an MDF board (not from the house, ahah) and collaged the original house plans and wallpaper from one of the bedrooms onto it. I mixed this with photos of the ruins, emulsion, coffee and a heat gun. The coffee helped suggest water damage (a lot of my stuff was ruined due to that) and created a burnt affect as well. The heat gun singed and created a burnt look. I then decided to use sand paper to sand away some of the wood and the pictures, creating lots of little scratches and marks - which added more to ageing and damage of the work.

There was a problem with using the heat gun, unfortunately. I'm very afraid of fire and causing things to possibly set a light, and heat gun does exactly that. At one point, the pages on the board emberded and there was a bit of a panic from me. But I've improved enough with my phobia that the next day, I could continue using it - just a but more carefully!

Anyway, this piece represent the fire and my progress from it. Before, I avoided the topic and tried to ignore my feelings about it, I closed myself up as much as possible about it something.  With this piece, I confronted that feelings and my issues. I learnt how to cope with sometimes getting shaking, and knowing when to allow myself space to think about it, as well as dealing with other people on the whole issues.

I don't feel this piece is particularly great, but it means everything to me.

That is a really cool idea
I really like the architectural plans being the backing design
